How To Protect Your Skin in the Summer

Summer is the period of the year when the days are the longest, when the temperatures are high, when everything is inviting us to spend time outside. However, summer is also a period of the year that comes with very specific and often difficult to tackle challenges for our skin. The outermost defense layer of our body is constantly exposed to the sun’s rays as well as to the wind in summer; whenever we enter an air-conditioned building interior, our skin becomes exposed to dry air, all these special circumstances taking a toll on our skin. Fortunately, there are lots of efficient and easy to implement measures that can counter all these negative effects – here are some.

Never Go Out without Sunscreen

Solar protection is essential for maintaining the elasticity and the health of your skin. Pick a product that has a high sun protection factor (SPF), level 30 or higher, and check out the skincare ingredients in the product as well – many sunscreen lotions, creams and sprays today can double as a day moisturizer as well, what’s more, you can find tinted moisturizer with spf formulated especially for your skin type (sensitive skin needs a different protection than oily or combination skin).

It is also very important to know how to use your sunscreen correctly. Applying your product only once a day is not enough, especially if you go into the water as well. Make sure to reapply your sunscreen every couple of hours on your entire body to maximize its protective effects.

Bathe and Sunbathe with Caution

The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so it is a good idea to stay out of the sun, in the shade, during that period. Take a shower each time after you swim in the sea or in the pool – the salt of the sea and the chlorine used in swimming pools have skin-drying effects and can harm your skin if they are not removed.

A Special Skincare Regimen

Your summer skincare routine should also include other measures to tackle the special environmental challenges of the hot season. Use a gentle cleanser to remove any impurities and dead skin cells from your skin in the morning and in the evening and apply a nourishing and moisturizing cream after each cleansing. Pick your cream depending on your skin type – if you have dry skin, choose products with increased emollient properties, while for oily skin, choose products that minimize the risk of breakouts.

Peeling should also be an integral part of your summer skincare routine. Choose a gentle, but efficient product and use it every couple of weeks, but don’t rub your skin too vigorously and always avoid the sensitive area around your eyes. After you exfoliate, apply a nourishing skin mask as well.

Consume Lots of Liquids

When it is hot outside, your entire body, including your skin, needs more hydration. Consume at least eight glasses of water, herbal tea and fresh fruit juices a day and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages as much as you can – they all dehydrate the body, causing skin dryness.
